Kevin(Hongjie) Xu

Hello, welcome to my website!

I am an data scientist and researcher, interested in data science and operations research. Before transitioning into computer science, I spent several years working in the business sector (Accounting-related Consulting).

My work interests are listed as follows:

Academia

I am currently pursuing my PhD in Computer Science at RMIT University, where my research focuses on integrating machine learning and operations research. Operations research is used to tackle complex, large-scale industry problems such as scheduling and vehicle routing.

Although exact methods often provide excellent bound guarantees and are based on strong mathematical foundations, they frequently struggle with large-scale optimization problems. Recently, machine learning and data-driven approaches have been explored as solutions to these challenges. The “learn to optimize” paradigm aims to automatically design smart heuristic search algorithms, eliminating the need for manual design.

My current search focuses on integrating ML-based heuristic methods with mathmatical programming method (e.g. column generation, branch & bound), aiming to solve large-scale optimization problems.
